Placental abruption is a common obstetric complication resulting from premature separation of the placenta. Although many factors and conditions have been associated with abruption, a clear etiology cannot be determined in many cases. While most cases of placentae abruption result in fetal salvage, this condition remains a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. In addition, in more severe cases maternal complications can be serious, warranting intensive care and invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
