In the intensive care unit (ICU), acutely ill patients with arrhythmias are frequently
treated with antiarrhythmic drugs. This review discusses the clinical conditions typically
encountered in the ICU that alter the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of commonly
prescribed antiarrhythmic drugs. In addition, the cardiovascular and noncardiovascular
toxicities of selected agents are delineated. Potentially clinically relevant drug-drug
interactions are also summarized.
