Agents used to support the failing circulation have been associated with many adverse effects. The most serious involve tachycardia, dysrhythmias, increased myocardial oxygen consumption, and excessive vasoconstriction. Metabolic, pulmonary, renal, and hematologic function may also be affected. Although each of the compounds reviewed can produce life-threatening complications, appropriate selection and monitoring minimize these unfavorable events.
