Parenteral nutrition is an important therapeutic or supportive modality in selected critically ill patients who are unable to be fed through the gastrointestinal tract. An understanding of the potential toxicities associated with the administration of parenteral nutrition is important, both because many of the toxicities are preventable and because the parenteral nutrition-related toxicity must be differentiated from progression or exacerbation of the underlying disease.
